When to use <em>hay<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We use <strong><em>hay <\/em><\/strong>to talk about existence or quantity, that is, to say that something exists, without being specific. <br>It\u2019s the impersonal form of <em>haber<\/em>, and it never changes for number \u2014 hay is used for both singular and plural.<br>Use <strong><em>hay<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>a)<\/strong> With indefinite articles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#135b79\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>&#8211; <strong>Hay <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">una<\/span> ni\u00f1a en el jard\u00edn.\u00a0<\/em><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The article <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">una<\/span> shows we\u2019re talking about a girl in general, not a specific one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>b) <\/strong>With numbers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#135b79\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>&#8211; <strong>Hay <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">doce<\/span> platos en la mesa.\u00a0<\/em><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re counting the plates, not identifying which ones \u2014 it\u2019s a general statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>c) <\/strong>With quantifiers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#135b79\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>&#8211; <strong>Hay <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">poca<\/span> gente en casa.\u00a0<\/em><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re talking generally about quantity, not about who the people are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>d)<\/strong> Directly with a noun<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#135b79\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>&#8211; <strong>Hay <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">flores <\/span>en la ventana.\u00a0<\/em><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t specify which flowers \u2014 just that some exist there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. When to use <em>estar<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We use <strong><em>estar <\/em><\/strong>when talking about something specific, already known, or when saying where something or someone is.<br>It\u2019s the equivalent of the English is \/ are \/ is located.<br>Use <strong><em>estar<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>a) <\/strong>With definite articles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#135b79\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>&#8211; En la cocina <strong>est\u00e1 <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">el<\/span> reloj.\u00a0<\/em><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we\u2019re talking about a specific clock \u2014 one that\u2019s already known to both speakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>b) <\/strong>With possessive adjectives<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#135b79\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>&#8211; \u00bf<strong>Est\u00e1 <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mi<\/span> madre en tu casa?\u00a0<\/em><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The person we\u2019re referring to (mi madre) is clearly identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <em>Hay <\/em>or <em>Estar? <\/em>Here\u2019s the trick to remember<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Both verbs can appear in the same sentence or dialogue \u2014 but they express different ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>Hay <\/strong>un restaurante en esta calle.<\/em> \u2192 There\u2019s a restaurant on this street. (existence, general)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>El restaurante <strong>est\u00e1 <\/strong>en esta calle. <\/em>\u2192 The restaurant is on this street. (location, specific)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>See the difference?<br>In the first case, we don\u2019t know which restaurant \u2014 in the second, we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.
